Teak - unique properties

Latin name: Tectona Grandis.

Teak is:

  • King of the Forests
  • Beautiful, with a golden glow and can sometimes be experienced with reddish-brown shades.
  • Color resistant. While many kinds of wood change color when exposed to moisture or are in contact with metals.
  • Weather and wind-resistant, peculiar by virtue of its rich content of natural oils. Neither cold, frost, moisture, or drought-sensitive.
  • Moisture-repellent. Surface treatment, for example of outdoor teak wood furniture, is unnecessary.
  • Resistant to putrefaction. Whether placed directly on the ground or in the water, it does not rot. Due to a resin called technical quinine, which also naturally repels termites.
  • Optimal for safety. The content of silicic anhydride is high and makes it perfect for, for example, ship decks, which are exposed to wind, weather, and extreme load. Do not distort or crack.
  • The choice of the craftsmen and sculptors. Gets beautifully shiny when polished and accepts both nails and screws. Craftsmen and sculptors prefer teak because of its versatile properties.

Teak only grows perfectly in confined areas. Especially in countries just around the equator. And it should preferably grow on slightly hilly areas that are not higher than 600 meters.

In Burma, the conditions are ideal and the teak from here is perceived as the best in the world. But Panama, in particular, offers the same good conditions. Thus, many teak plantations in Panama have started up with seeds from the Burmese teak.
