Social Monitoring Indicators
In Tectona Production, Inc., we effort to maintain solid relations and effective communication with our valuable collaborators, as well as with our neighbors and adjoining. To achieve this objective we implemented diverse strategies, which include:
I. Continuous staff training
We commit to offering continuous training for our staff, addressing a broad range of topics that go from social, educative, Ambiental, professional, and even the emotional, we have the objective to enrich and strengthen their integral development. This initiative materialized through our workshops, where it provided solid and personalized formation that sought to enhance the abilities and knowledge of our team.
II. Socialization with our neighbors and adjoining
We commit to environmental sustainability, but also to our neighbor communities’ well-being. As part of our efforts of social responsibility, we carry out activities of sensibilization and communitarian participation.
One of our initiatives consists of doing periodical surveys to understand the necessities and preoccupations of our community. Through these surveys, we want to establish an open and constructive dialogue that allows us to adapt our practices to the local expectations and requirements.
Also, as part of our commitment to environmental education, we distribute books and didactical material about topics related to the conservation of the environment and the importance of reforestation.
We firmly believe that education is the key to fomenting greater environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices between our neighbors and collaborators.
These actions not only strengthen our bonds with the community but also contribute to our shared objective of preserving and protecting the natural environment in which we operate.
III. Social health and exposition to pesticides
We carry out a continuous vigilance of the phytosanitary status in our projects, as has previously been mentioned, trying to minimize the use of chemicals. However, when it is necessary to use these practices, we implement a series of measures. This includes regular training of our staff to prevent possible intoxications, as well as making inventories and a constant actualization to identify and use those pesticides that could produce less negative impact and that are FSC-approved. Also, we care for the well-being of our neighbors, hence we carry out surveys of social opinion every three years to know if they have been affected, to which until the moment haven’t been exposed.
IV. Local economic development
Intending to enhance local economic development, as a company we maintain a database of local providers and promote entrepreneurship among our collaborators.
At the same time, we are in the process of organizing marketing and social media management community workshops to encourage the commercialization of local products.
Besides, our company counts on an integral program that includes scholarships, internships, and professional practices, to support the growth and professional development of young talents.
According to the 2023 census carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), the province of Darién has a total population of 54,235 people. Of these, 41,723 people have reading and writing skills, while 7,717 people lack these skills. In addition, only 20,879 people are affiliated with Panama's social security system, administered by the Social Security Fund.
V. Production of benefits and/or diversified products
We are proud to contribute to environmental care, as well as provide tangible benefits to our communities’ government institutions, and NGOs. One of the ways in which we do this is by diversifying our products including donations such as posts, seedlings, and others.
These diversified products not only strengthen our relationship with the community but also offer additional opportunities for the sustainable use of forestry resources. By giving posts, seedings, and plants, we are providing our neighbors with tools that they can use for multiple endings, from construction to ornamentation and agriculture.
We commit to continue exploiting new ways of generating mutual benefits among our company and the community, maintaining always our commitment to sustainability and local development in mind.
