Documentation of the property's suitability for teak cultivation

  • The average temperature is 27°C, which is close to the optimum temperature of 25°C–28°C.
  • The annual rainfall is 2,500 mm, occurring during the period from April to December. The rainfall stops between January and March, when the dry season begins. This ensures that the teak trees experience a slower growth period and temporarily stop growing, resulting in improved wood quality.
  • The elevation above sea level is 69 meters, which ensures less variation between day and night temperatures.
  • The soil is a nutrient-rich sandy loam soil with a pH between 6.5 and 6.7. It is porous, well-drained, and deep, ensuring a good supply of nutrients and water, resulting in strong root development.
  • The property’s terrain is highly suitable for teak cultivation. There are slopes between 5% and 20%, which ensure good drainage and prevent waterlogging, even during the extreme rainfall that occasionally occurs in this region.
  • Wind conditions are limited to short-duration gusts associated with heavy rainfall. This can be challenging for teak trees during their second and third growing seasons due to rapid height growth and insufficient trunk strength at this stage.
  • The teak growing conditions at Filo del Tallo II are classified as a High-Class Site, meaning Quality 1. With optimal management and the use of appropriate genetics, the best possible growth of the teak trees can be achieved.
  • Growth measurements after the fourth growing season show that diameter and height are at or above the expected levels compared with international growth tables recognized for optimal teak locations.
  • We have an updated forest map with a description of the associated vegetation.
  • The operational plan has been prepared for the management of the plantation.
  • Annual increment measurements have been carried out since the second year after establishment, which facilitates the estimation of the standing timber volume.

Planted Area

  • The property was planted in 2018.
  • 2018: 69.55 hectares of teak planted with clones.
  • Naturally occurring native species: 11.35 hectares.
  • Conservation areas: Total 9.76 hectares.

Landscape and Natural Values

To the west, the property has a view of untouched natural forest, which forms part of the Reserva Hidrológica Filo del Tallo, a nature reserve bordering the property. The reserve is a so-called watershed protection area, whose purpose is to protect the region’s water resources.
Because Tectona Production has chosen to leave the conservation areas untouched, the previously waterlogged grasslands have today developed into natural forest. These areas now function as ecological corridors for fauna and flora, meaning that birds, monkeys, and other wildlife thrive in areas that were previously used for cattle grazing.
